Adobe reports more than 18 billion assets generated globally, while the official employment series projects graphic-design jobs growing 2% through 2034 (Adobe 2026) (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024). The tasks are moving faster than the headcount. The evidence places graphic designers at 34 on the AI-Proof Score, rank 20 of 159, in the Critically Exposed band: commodity production substitutes cleanly, art direction does not.

Official employment projection
2024-2034
+2%
The authority does not attribute this change to AI.
The BLS category matches the occupation closely, but BLS attributes no part of the projection to AI; its only AI-related statement is that automated design tools including AI may reduce companies' need to contract with freelance graphic designers. Other national series cited (Australia ANZSCO 2324, Canada NOC 52120) combine graphic designers with web designers and illustrators and are not comparable.
What the employment figures say
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 265,900 people in Graphic Designers (SOC 27-1024) in 2024 and projects 2% growth to 2034 — about 5,700 additional jobs — with roughly 20,000 openings a year, many from replacement rather than net growth (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024). That does not agree with a score of 34, and the mismatch is the most useful thing here: BLS attributes no part of its projection to AI, and its only AI-related statement is that automated design tools may reduce companies' need to contract with freelance graphic designers (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024). Freelance and contract designers are exactly the people a payroll-based occupational series counts weakly, so the exposure can land largely outside the number. Other national series are not comparable — Canada's Job Bank reports a $31.25 median hourly wage and region-by-region prospects for a category that groups designers with illustrators (Government of Canada Job Bank 2026), and the UK's Skilled Worker list places graphic and multimedia designers under SOC 2020 code 2142 with no employment, wage or AI metric at all (UK Government 2025).
What the research says about graphic designers
Now
What AI covers today is commodity production: output that is specified rather than conceived. Generative image tools directly substitute for that layer of graphic work (Anthropic Economic Index 2025). Adobe — which sells both the automation and the software stack around it — lists Generative Fill, Generative Expand and Prompt to Edit, features that map onto image extension, object replacement and prompt-based editing designers otherwise do by hand (Adobe 2026). Amazon, selling the tool it describes, says its ads image generator produces lifestyle and brand-themed imagery and variations in seconds from product details, aimed at advertisers with no in-house or agency support (Amazon 2023). WPP, promoting its own service, announced an AI-enabled Production Studio built with Hogarth and NVIDIA Omniverse spanning text, image, video, 3D and multilingual channel-ready assets after a 12-month pilot with Ford and L'Oreal, and reported guardrails, human oversight and no designer headcount change (WPP 2024).
Designers are notably cooler on the tools than the vendors are. Reporting on an Envato survey of 1,780 creative professionals and an Exeter DIGIT Lab survey of 500 UK creatives found more than 90% using AI, but daily use among designers at 40% against 68% for web developers and 60% for marketers, with 81% saying AI dulled creativity and 78% calling its output soulless — from a survey sponsored by a commercial creative marketplace and written up in trade media (DesignWeek 2025). A 2024 ACM study interviewing 21 expert avatar designers found practitioners struggling to adjust generated outputs and unable to use iterative generation as reliable inspiration (ACM 2024). Meanwhile reported median annual wages rose from $52,110 in 2019 to $61,300 in 2024, and none of the cited tables attributes that movement to AI (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2019).
The next few years
The next few years turn on delegation rather than assistance. Earlier exposure measures asked whether a model could speed up a task with a human prompting and reviewing each step; agentic systems plan, call tools, spawn subagents and run multi-step work unattended, which shifts the question to whether the work can finish without the designer in the loop (Anthropic 2026). For creative design that points one way: image and asset generation delegated outright for low-stakes commodity work, with brand and art direction still held by people (Microsoft Research 2025). Pulling the other way, obligations are being added rather than removed — the US Department of Justice's April 2024 final rule requires covered state and local government web content and mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA by 26 April 2027 for entities over 50,000 population and 26 April 2028 for smaller entities and special districts, which creates continuing human review and testing work on visual output (US Department of Justice 2024).
Longer term
Longer term the defensible ground is judgement, not throughput. Federal visual-design guidance requires planning and testing for accessibility, including contrast and not relying on colour alone, which keeps human interpretation and testing inside the design process (Digital.gov 2025). The State of AI in Design 2026 report, based on more than 900 designers and more than 20 leader interviews, describes off-the-shelf tool use at roughly double its earlier comparison rate, faster ideation and prototyping, and roles blurring across product management, engineering and design — though the report sits within a design and technology investment ecosystem with an interest in promoting productive AI use, and its population is not limited to graphic designers (Designer Fund and associated industry partners 2026). A practitioner feature from September 2025 makes the same point from inside the studio: Forest Young argued AI can replicate formal ingredients such as typography, grids and colour theory, which makes originality and point of view matter more (It's Nice That 2025).
What is exposed, and what protects it
● Where the exposure is
The exposed core is volume production: social assets, layouts and variations of things that already exist, which generative image tools substitute for directly (Anthropic Economic Index 2025). Diffusion among professionals is already wide — a 2024 survey of 380 people in visual creation found 159 had used AI static-image tools, 102 of them professionals, although the preprint establishes no employment effect (arXiv 2024). The commercial pressure is aimed at the bottom of the market first: Amazon's generator targets advertisers who previously had to hire someone (Amazon 2023), and the statistical authority's own AI remark concerns reduced need to contract with freelancers (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024). Canva, which sells the tools and presents adoption as a success story, describes a workflow generating graphics, photos, illustrations, video and reporting, and frames the role shifting away from manually designing every asset (Canva 2024).
○ What holds
What holds is the part of the job that decides rather than renders. Brand systems and art direction retain value because taste, point of view and stakeholder accountability are not outputs a prompt can specify (It's Nice That 2025). Regulation adds a second moat: accessibility rules carry compliance deadlines and require planning, contrast checks and testing that a person signs off (US Department of Justice 2024) (Digital.gov 2025). Experts also report that generated results are hard to steer once produced, and that stakeholder dilemmas arise around them (ACM 2024). AIGA — a body representing designers, with a professional interest in the claim — argues AI automates processes such as layout adjustment and frees designers for higher-level work under human supervision (AIGA 2023).
Which tasks go first
Already covered: image extension, object replacement, prompt-based editing and the generation of asset variations, all sold as shipping product features (Adobe 2026). Layout adjustment is described by the designers' own trade body as automatable (AIGA 2023), and channel-ready assets, multilingual copy adaptation and personalised communications are packaged together in agency production pipelines (WPP 2024). The agentic shift moves the boundary from assisted production to unattended production — commodity assets generated and iterated without a designer supervising each step, with brand and art direction left outside the loop (Microsoft Research 2025) (Nous Research 2026). What stays human is the work before and after generation: defining the brief, judging whether an output is any good, resolving stakeholder disagreement about generated results (ACM 2024), and accessibility interpretation and testing on the final artefact (Digital.gov 2025). Practitioners also report using AI as an accelerant for prototyping and workflow automation while still relying on mentorship and personal connections to get work (It's Nice That 2025).
What to do about it
Move up the brief, not just up the toolset
The substitution lands on specified output, while brand systems and art direction hold their value (Anthropic Economic Index 2025) (It's Nice That 2025). That argues for shifting the proportion of your work that involves setting direction, defining systems and defending decisions to clients, rather than competing on asset throughput. Tool fluency helps, but it is the layer being commoditised.
Make accessibility a named part of what you sell
Covered state and local government web content and mobile apps must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA by 26 April 2027 for larger entities and 26 April 2028 for smaller ones (US Department of Justice 2024). Federal visual-design guidance already requires planning and testing for contrast and for not relying on colour alone (Digital.gov 2025). Designers who can interpret and test against those requirements hold work that a generator cannot sign off.
Check how much of your income sits in the freelance commodity layer
The statistical authority's only AI-related comment is that automated design tools may reduce companies' need to contract with freelance graphic designers (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024), and vendor tools are marketed at exactly the buyers who used to commission that work (Amazon 2023). Mapping which of your clients buy execution versus which buy judgement tells you where the exposure actually is in your own book, which is more informative than the occupation-level score.
The baseline is not your score
The 34 on this page describes the occupation as a whole. Your own position depends on your task mix, how much of your work is direction rather than production, and where your income comes from — the quiz adjusts the baseline against those answers.

Common questions
Which parts of a graphic designer's job can AI already do?
Generative image tools substitute directly for commodity production — social assets, layouts and variations (Anthropic Economic Index 2025). Shipping features cover image extension, object replacement and prompt-based editing (Adobe 2026), and layout adjustment is described as automatable by the designers' own trade body (AIGA 2023).
Is this about graphic designers losing jobs, or about the tasks changing?
On the evidence available, it is tasks. The official series counts 265,900 jobs in 2024 and projects 2% growth to 2034, and attributes none of that to AI (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024). Every vendor announcement describing automated production — WPP's, Canva's, Amazon's — reports no designer headcount outcome (WPP 2024) (Canva 2024) (Amazon 2023).
Are junior graphic designers affected first?
The signal is suggestive rather than settled. Early-career designers describe using AI as an accelerant for prototyping, coding and workflow automation while still depending on mentorship and personal connections to find work (It's Nice That 2025). What is measurable is that the substitutable layer is the specified, high-volume output juniors are typically handed (Anthropic Economic Index 2025).
What is AI still bad at in this job?
Steering and accountability. Expert designers report difficulty adjusting generated outputs and cannot treat iterative generation as reliable inspiration, and generated results create stakeholder dilemmas (ACM 2024). Accessibility work also requires human planning, contrast judgement and testing (Digital.gov 2025), and 78% of surveyed designers called AI output soulless (DesignWeek 2025).
Should I still enter graphic design?
The research base for this role is mixed rather than conclusive, so read the score as directional. Official projections show modest growth and roughly 20,000 openings a year, many from replacement (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024), while the production layer is the part being absorbed (Anthropic Economic Index 2025). Entering with direction, systems and accessibility skills is a different proposition from entering as an asset producer.

How this score was built
The AI-Proof Score is an estimate of how exposed an occupation's core tasks are to AI over roughly the next three to five years, on a 0–100 scale where higher is safer. It measures the exposure of tasks, which sits upstream of, and is softer than, job loss — it is not a probability that this job disappears, and not a claim about any individual doing it. The full derivation, the four research families behind it and its limitations are set out in the methodology, and every occupation is ranked in the AI Job Impact Report 2026.
