Marketers have adopted generative AI faster than most professional groups, yet the occupation's official headcount and pay both kept climbing (American Marketing Association 2024)(US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2021). That tension is the answer: the evidence does not point to replacement. The role scores 50 out of 100 on the AI-Proof Score, ranking 76 of 159 occupations in the Mixed Exposure band, because the execution layer is exposed while strategy, budget ownership and brand accountability are not.

Official employment projection
2024-2034
+6.6%
The authority does not attribute this change to AI.
The projections figure is reported as 407.0 thousand jobs in 2024 rising to 433.7 thousand in 2034; the separate BLS OES series reports 368,940 employed Marketing Managers in 2023. SOC 11-2021 excludes marketing coordinators, copywriters and media buyers, and sits within the broader SOC 11-2020 management group, so automation of an ad or article is not automatically automation of this occupation.
What the employment figures say
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects its category Marketing Managers, SOC 11-2021, to grow from 407.0 thousand jobs in 2024 to 433.7 thousand in 2034 — an increase of 26.7 thousand, or 6.6%, with 34.3 thousand annual openings — and does not identify AI as a separate cause (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025). That growth is not a contradiction of a mixed exposure score, because the two measure different things: how much of the task content current AI can do, against how many people will hold the job over a decade. The official category also excludes marketing coordinators, copywriters and media buyers, and sits inside the broader management group, so automating an ad or an article is not automation of this occupation (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025). A separate BLS series counts 368,940 employed marketing managers in 2023, a reminder that the answer depends on which survey you read (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2023).
What the research says about marketing managers
Now
Adoption is close to universal, and the measured gains cluster in writing and drafting. An AMA survey of more than 1,000 professional marketers, run with the AI creative-tools company Lightricks, found nearly 90% had used generative AI at work, more than 71% used it at least weekly and 85% of users said productivity rose — respondent-reported figures from a body that serves marketers (American Marketing Association 2024). A randomized experiment with 453 college-educated professionals found occupation-specific writing took 40% less time and scored 18% higher on quality, with weaker writers gaining most (Science 2023). A field study of 78 workers at IG Group found marketing specialists cut conceptualization from 63 to 23 minutes and writing from 87 to 22 minutes, though colleagues with real context still produced better copy than more distant technology staff, 3.96/5 and 3.92/5 against 3.42/5 (Harvard Business School Working Knowledge 2026). Coordination work is moving as well: Dentsu, publishing internal advocacy for its own AI program rather than an independent evaluation, reports 67% of Microsoft 365 Copilot users saw time savings in meeting organization, transcription and schedule optimization (Dentsu 2024). None of it shows up as contraction — BLS counted 278,690 marketing managers in 2021 and 368,940 in 2023, with the median wage rising from $135,030 to $157,620, and attributes neither change to AI (US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2023)(US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2021).
The next few years
Over the next few years the pressure lands on capability rather than headcount. The applicability research places strategy, budget and people accountability above the automatable execution tasks, which is the reason the management layer is being augmented rather than absorbed (Microsoft Research 2025). The European Marketing Agenda 2026, drawing on more than 1,800 marketing and sales professionals and summarized by CIM — a body that sells AI training alongside the release — found 43% of CMOs treat AI as a top strategic focus and 78% expect budgets to stay stable or grow, while 45% cite lack of expertise as the primary difficulty and only 11% report a granular AI skills framework, program and budget (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026). Just 12% say they have professionalized and scaled AI use, and 5% report none at all, so the gap between intent and operating practice is where the next few years of this job will be spent (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026).
Longer term
Further out, the binding constraint on marketing automation looks regulatory as much as technical. The EU AI Act requires people to be informed when they interact directly with an AI system unless it is obvious, requires disclosure for deepfake image, audio or video content, and requires disclosure clear and distinguishable at first exposure for certain AI-generated text published on matters of public interest (European Parliament and Council of the European Union 2024). The FTC's final rule of 14 August 2024 prohibits creating, selling or disseminating fake reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated material the responsible party knew or should have known was false, with civil penalties attached (Federal Trade Commission 2024). The ICO permits solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects only under specified conditions, with safeguards including meaningful information about the logic, human intervention and the ability to challenge the outcome (Information Commissioner's Office n.d.). CIM's published principles put responsibility for an AI agent's output on the marketer who authorizes or manages it and treat AI as a junior team member needing human intent and strategy — professional norm rather than statute, from an organization that sells training, but pointed in the same direction as the law (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026).
Each of those obligations needs a named person to sign the work off, and that person is a manager.
What is exposed, and what protects it
● Where the exposure is
What is exposed is the execution this job sits on top of. O*NET's listing for SOC 11-2021 pairs strategy and budget work with hands-on systems — CRM, Google Ads, HubSpot and Marketo — and those systems are where automated drafting, targeting and reporting arrive first (O*NET OnLine n.d.). Drafting is the clearest case: first drafts of content are now delegated rather than merely assisted, with editorial judgment kept human (Microsoft Research 2025)(Eloundou et al. 2023). Publicis, which sells these services and was promoting its own AI strategy to clients and investors, says its CoreAI system spans insight, media, creative, production, operations and client management, and reports personalized content produced in days or weeks rather than months (Publicis Groupe 2024).
○ What holds
Strategy, budget ownership, cross-team coordination and brand accountability sit above the automatable execution, and that is what holds the score at the middle of the range (Microsoft Research 2025). The BCG experiment is the sharpest evidence for the limit: 758 knowledge workers using AI completed 12.2% more tasks and worked 25.1% faster inside the model's capability frontier, but were 19% less likely to answer correctly on a complex managerial task outside it (Harvard Business School 2023). That outside-frontier task was a three-brand CEO memo requiring reconciliation of quantitative and interview data, which is recognizably marketing management work (MIT Sloan 2023). Regulation supplies a second moat, since disclosure and provenance obligations require a human to approve public-facing output (European Parliament and Council of the European Union 2024). And audiences still price authenticity: disclosing AI use in luxury advertising reduced perceived effort, authenticity and evaluation in a Journal of Advertising Research study, though high creativity attenuated the effect (Journal of Advertising Research 2025).
Which tasks go first
Split the job into tasks and the line is reasonably clear. O*NET describes formulating strategy, directing marketing policies, managing budgets and ROI, setting pricing, forecasting, monitoring trends, negotiating with vendors and conducting research (O*NET OnLine n.d.). The UK mapping describes the same shape under SOC 2020 code 2432 — strategy, return on investment, campaign planning, reporting, suppliers, stakeholders and team management, at a median salary of GBP 46,487 (Skills England n.d.). On the covered side are content drafting, campaign copy and the writing-heavy parts of reporting, where measured time savings are largest (Science 2023)(Harvard Business School Working Knowledge 2026). The agentic shift changes the question from whether AI can help with a task to whether it can finish one unattended, since current systems plan, use tools, spawn subagents and run multi-step work on a schedule (Nous Research 2026)(Anthropic 2026). What stays with the manager is final editorial judgment and accountability for branded voice (Microsoft Research 2025), along with the judgment calls that fall outside the model's frontier (Harvard Business School 2023).
What to do about it
Own the approval trail for AI-assisted output
Disclosure, provenance and human-review obligations are becoming explicit: the EU AI Act sets labelling requirements for synthetic media and certain published text, and the FTC rule attaches civil penalties to AI-generated fake reviews and testimonials (European Parliament and Council of the European Union 2024)(Federal Trade Commission 2024). CIM's principles place the responsibility for an authorized AI agent's output on the marketer who manages it (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026). Documenting who reviewed what, and on what basis, is work that has to sit with a manager rather than a tool.
Write the AI skills framework your team does not have
Only 11% of surveyed organizations report a granular AI skills framework, program and budget, while 45% name lack of expertise as their primary difficulty — findings from a trade body that also sells the training (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026). Building that framework for your own team is a management deliverable, not a prompting exercise. It also puts you on the side of the work that 43% of CMOs say is a top strategic focus (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026).
Keep the outside-frontier decisions on your desk
AI users in the BCG experiment were faster and more productive inside the model's capability frontier, and 19% less likely to be correct on a complex managerial task beyond it (Harvard Business School 2023). That task was a memo reconciling quantitative results with interview evidence across three brands (MIT Sloan 2023). Deliberately keeping budget trade-offs, pricing calls and conflicting-evidence judgments as your own output is a defensible position rather than a hoarding of work.
The baseline is not your score
The 50 on this page is the baseline for the occupation, not for you. Your own answers — how much of your week is execution against budget and strategy, how you already use AI, where you sit in the reporting line — move the number in both directions.

Common questions
What does the AI-Proof Score actually measure?
It measures task exposure — how much of an occupation's task content current AI systems can already do — not the probability that anyone loses a job. For this role the reasoning is that a management layer of strategy, budget and people accountability sits above automatable execution (Microsoft Research 2025). Confidence here is medium, so 50 is best read as a position in the middle of the ranking rather than a precise reading.
Will junior marketing managers be affected before senior ones?
The evidence speaks to task quality rather than seniority directly. In the IG Group field study, marketing specialists were able to take on work normally done by web analysts, but people with real context still produced better copy than more distant colleagues, 3.96/5 and 3.92/5 against 3.42/5 (Harvard Business School Working Knowledge 2026). A randomized writing experiment found weaker performers gained the most from AI, which lifts junior output while compressing the gap that junior work used to be paid for (Science 2023).
Is AI a bigger threat or a bigger tool for marketing managers?
On current evidence it functions mainly as a tool: nearly 90% of surveyed marketers reported workplace use and 85% of users said productivity increased, in a survey run by a marketers' association with an AI creative-tools partner (American Marketing Association 2024). The sharper risk is reputational. Coca-Cola's AI-made holiday ad drew criticism for being soulless and for displacing artists, yet passed more than 56 million views, with the company saying human storytellers worked alongside generative AI (NBC News 2024).
What should marketing managers learn first?
Governance and measurement, ahead of prompt technique. The scarce capability is organizing AI use: 45% of surveyed marketers cite an expertise gap and only 11% report a granular framework, program and budget (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026). CIM's principles also assign checks for bias, misinformation and provenance to the marketer who authorizes the agent, which is management work by description (Chartered Institute of Marketing 2026).

How this score was built
The AI-Proof Score is an estimate of how exposed an occupation's core tasks are to AI over roughly the next three to five years, on a 0–100 scale where higher is safer. It measures the exposure of tasks, which sits upstream of, and is softer than, job loss — it is not a probability that this job disappears, and not a claim about any individual doing it. The full derivation, the four research families behind it and its limitations are set out in the methodology, and every occupation is ranked in the AI Job Impact Report 2026.
